How Much Does It Cost to Start a Digital Marketing Agency in the UK?
A realistic breakdown of the costs of starting a UK digital marketing agency, including company setup, website, CRM, software, staff and client acquisition.

The cost of starting a digital marketing agency in the UK can range from very lean to surprisingly expensive.
The difference is usually not the Companies House registration. The real cost comes from building an operation that looks credible, responds to leads quickly and can deliver what it sells.
A useful launch budget has six buckets:
- company and compliance
- brand and website
- CRM and software
- people
- sales and acquisition
- working-capital reserve
Company and compliance costs
If you are starting a limited company, check the current Companies House registration fee rather than relying on an old blog post. Government fees and processes can change.
You may also need to budget for:
- accountant fees
- professional indemnity or other relevant business insurance
- ICO/data-protection requirements where applicable
- contract or legal review
- registered office or mail handling if needed
- payroll support once relevant
- VAT administration if and when it applies to your business
Do not assume every item applies to every founder. Your accountant and relevant professional advisers should confirm what your business actually needs.
Domain, business email and website
A professional agency should not be selling digital credibility from a free email address.
Budget for:
- domain registration
- business email
- website hosting or platform costs
- a professional website build
- ongoing maintenance
Kydos typically treats a standard five-page agency site as enough for a new agency. The five pages can be whatever the business needs. Ecommerce and large rebuilds should be custom scoped because page count and functionality change the workload.
CRM and automation
A CRM is not just a contact database.
A useful starter CRM should cover:
- lead capture
- pipeline stages
- booking
- immediate acknowledgement
- sales notifications
- follow-up
- email automation
- lead-management workflow
- payment/invoice connections where appropriate
- reporting
The cheapest possible software stack is not always the cheapest operation. If five disconnected tools create manual work and missed leads, the hidden cost is staff time and lost sales.
Creative and operating software
Your team may need tools for:
- graphic design
- video editing
- stock images and assets
- document storage
- social scheduling
- reporting
- password management
- meetings
- proposals
- e-signatures
- project or task management
Kydos creatives currently work with professional design and editing tools including CapCut, Freepik, Photoshop and other production software depending on the job.
You do not need every subscription on day one. Start with the tools your actual delivery process requires.
Staff costs
This is the budget line new agency owners often underestimate.
If you plan to advertise for clients, you need to know who will respond to leads and who will fulfil the work.
A lean starting structure can include:
- Account Manager
- Creative
- Sales Closer
If you want the business to become less owner-dependent, an Operations Manager becomes another cost as the company grows.
The exact salary or contractor budget depends on location, employment status, working pattern and quality level. Do not choose staffing solely on the lowest possible rate.
Client-acquisition budget
Marketing the marketing agency is a separate cost.
Kydos currently recommends a controlled initial Meta Ads test budget of around £300 for a new agency using our model.
That is not a guaranteed client budget. It is a testing budget.
You should also know your sales economics before increasing spend:
- cost per lead
- contact rate
- appointment rate
- show rate
- close rate
- average first payment
- monthly recurring revenue
- gross margin
- payback period
If your sales process is broken, increasing the ad budget simply buys more leads for the broken process.
Working capital
A new recurring-revenue business still needs cash.
Clients can pay late. Ads need paying before the client renews. Staff need paying even if a client delays. Software renews automatically.
A reserve gives you room to operate without making desperate decisions.
Programme cost versus business startup cost
Kydos Academy currently has three implementation routes:
- Blueprint: £2,500
- Build With Us: £5,000
- Done For You: £10,000
Those fees pay for the Academy programme and the implementation included in the selected route. They are not the entire startup budget of the independent agency.
Advertising spend, third-party software/provider costs, staff and external professional fees remain separate unless your written scope specifically says otherwise.
Build the budget before you commit
A good startup budget should show:
- one-off setup costs
- monthly fixed costs
- variable delivery costs
- staffing
- acquisition
- tax provision
- cash reserve
- expected first-payment revenue
- expected monthly recurring revenue
- gross margin
If you cannot see the monthly cash requirement, you do not yet know whether the agency is affordable to run.
Kydos Academy includes startup-budget and hiring-affordability tools inside the programme. You can compare the programme routes or talk through your launch budget with us.
